Novel Efficient Acidic Ionic Liquid Polymer for Biodiesel Synthesis from Waste Oils

A highly stable acid ionic liquid polymer was prepared via the polymerization of 1-vinyl-3-(propyl-3-sulfony) imidazolium 4-styrenesulfonate. Both the cations and anions were polymerized to form the acidic ionic cross-linked polymer and the formation of cross-linked bonds prevented the loss of acidic sites. The ionic-crosslinking between cations and anions enhance the activity and stability of the ionic liquid polymer that decomposes at temperatures over 230°C. The polymer is very efficient for biodiesel synthesis from waste oils with the total yield exceeding 99% within 4 h.
