In April 2020, a new student arrived from Brazil and was placed in my U.S. History class. Fernanda (pseudonym) came during a period of social and political unrest. This made her placement in my U.S. History class more significant. To understand the current climate within the United States, Fernanda would need to understand its historical roots.
