Photonic frequency-multiplication millimeter-wave generation with cascaded DPMZMs

A novel structure for photonic frequency-multiplication millimeter-wave (mm-wave) generation with two cascaded dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulators (DPMZMs) but no optical filter is demonstrated. By properly adjusting the phase and amplitude of radio frequency (RF) driving signal and the bias points of two DPMZMs, frequency 12-tupled, 18-tupled, or 24-tupled high-spectral-purity mm-wave signals are shown to be generated. This scheme largely eliminates the bandwidth limitation introduced by the electrical or optical filter in photonic frequency-multiplication mm-wave generation.
